Zurich University of Teacher Education
Location: Zurich - Switzerland
Project type: Bussiness Universities and Campus
The Zurich University of Teacher Education (PH Zurich) is the training and higher education institution for teachers in the Canton of Zurich. It was founded in autumn 2002 by merging eleven previous teacher education institutions. The PH Zurich is divided into the areas of education for prospective teachers at all levels, continuing education and counselling for teachers, head teachers and school authorities, as well as research and services.
Around 4,000 students, 6,000 continuing education participants, about 550 lecturers, academic staff and assistants as well as 240 employees work at the PH Zurich.
Figures
- 750 access points
- 4000 student cards
- 800 employee cards
The ProAccess Space software is quite complex due to its enormous range of functions. However, once you understand the structure with zones, times, people and their interaction, the operation is coherent and smooth. I appreciate most the functions of the calendar, periods, time zones and the event list.

For the new building of the Zurich University of Teacher Education, only an up-to-date electronic access control system was considered, which in particular allows for convenient access rights management. The university already had a mechatronic stand-alone system at its old location, but it did not seem up to the requirements of the new building because of its mechanical components and complete offline operation. Therefore, it was decided to introduce a new system. The search began by exploring the providers. At the same time, those responsible sought advice and information from other universities. The input from the Winterthur University of Applied Sciences, among others, provided the impetus to also look into SALTO, as they were very satisfied with the wire-free electronic solution from the provider in Winterthur. This finally led to a test installation in Zurich in order to fundamentally deal with the functions and possibilities of modern wire-free access control solutions and to gain an impression of the multi-application capability (among other things, printers were integrated).
In the run-up to the purchase, it was defined which functionalities should definitely be included in the new system. These included a functioning amok functionality and the integration of multifunctional campus cards for employees and students while simultaneously using the previous ID card technology. At the same time, the system had to be easy to maintain, the supplier had to be able to offer convincing support, and the technology had to be user-friendly and thus manageable.
The amok functionality plays a central role in the PH Zurich's access control concept. The Canton of Zurich stipulates a mandatory amok solution for new buildings of educational institutions. Although this does not necessarily have to lock - an alarm is the minimum requirement - the amok solution of the PH Zurich should not be a separate design, but should be integrated into the locking system.

The Zurich University of Teacher Education uses an electronic solution from SALTO Systems for access control in its new building, which was opened in 2012. A total of 120 XS4 Original electronic escutcheons in the narrow version with AMOK functionality are installed on the doors of the seminar rooms. Eleven electronic SALTO GEO double cylinders are in use in the library. Six more standard cylinders are used for the personally assigned instrument lockers for students. In addition, the student lockers in the public areas, staff changing rooms and lecturers' cloakrooms are equipped with a total of 564 XS4 Locker electronic locker locks. In addition, two XS4 electronic double reader escutcheons are used at the controlled staff passage between the library and the writing centre, as well as several SALTO offline wall readers for the lift control. There are 36 SALTO online wall readers installed at the external entrances and lecture hall doors, which not only control access but also function as update terminals.
The credentials are multifunctional campus cards. With them, staff and students not only gain access, but can also make cashless payments in the canteen and cafeteria and use the printers. Moreover, the contactless cards are used to check out and return loans in the library.
Rooms and areas can be locked locally via the AMOK function of the electronic escutcheons. The doors can then only be accessed with specially authorised credentials and thus offer a safe place of retreat in emergency situations.
Key benefits
- The AMOK function can be used to transform rooms and areas into safe places of retreat in emergency situations.
- Interface to HR administration for convenient issuing of employee ID cards.
- Interface to enrolment management for efficient issuing of campus ID cards for students.
- Clear and manageable administration of access rights
- Simple maintenance
